Welcome! We are so glad you are here. During this time of school and child care closures and stay-at-home orders, we want to offer families ways to connect and keep the joy and wonder in young children’s lives.
In these blogs you will find daily offerings of invitations for your children, organized by age group, along with links to other blogs, websites and other resources for families during these challenging times. We are also incorporating our Outdoor Learning Initiative with ideas for engaging with nature and the earth.
We hope you will connect with us in the comments and on social media. We will be using your feedback to inform our planning.
Lakewood Avenue Children’s School is a Reggio-inspired, full-day school for children age 1-5 located in Durham N.C. Our curriculum is emergent. We plan week to week based on the developmental needs and interests of the children. The activities of each week determine the flow into the next week.
We are influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach, including:
- View of the child as a strong, capable, and competent protagonist of her own knowledge, growth and development;
- Teacher as collaborator and co-researcher to facilitate children’s learning and development;
- Reciprocal on-going relationships between parents, children, and teachers;
- The hundred languages of children – acknowledging that children are born communicators and use all kinds of creative expression, including art, music, dance, dramatic play, block building, and science exploration to communicate and to grow.
We are excited to offer these invitations and resources to the greater Durham community and hope you will join us.
